+The Free Software Foundation India (FSF India) is a non-profit
16
+organisation committed to advocating, promoting and propagating the use
17
+and development of free (swatantra) software in India.
18
+
19
+Our goal is to ensure the long term adoption of Free Software, and aim
20
+for the day when all software will be free. This includes educating
21
+people about software freedom and convincing them that it is the freedom
22
+that matters. We regard non-free software as a problem to be solved, not

+## About Richard M Stallman (RMS)
26

+<img src="{{site.baseurl}}/images/rms-web.jpg" align="left"
28
+style="padding-right: 20px">
29

30
+Richard Stallman founded the free software movement in 1983 when [he
31
+announced he would develop the GNU operating
32
+system](https://www.gnu.org/gnu/initial-announcement.html), a Unix-like
33
+operating system meant to consist entirely of [free
34
+software](https://gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html). He has been the GNU
35
+project's leader ever since. In October 1985 he started the Free
36
+Software Foundation.
37
+
38
+Since the mid-1990s, Stallman has spent most of his time in political
39
+advocacy for free software, and spreading the ethical ideas of the
40
+movement, as well as campaigning against both software patents and
41
+dangerous extension of copyright laws. Before that, Richard developed a
42
+number of widely used programs that are components of GNU, including the
43
+original Emacs, the GNU Compiler Collection, the GNU symbolic debugger
44
+(gdb), GNU Emacs, and various others.
45
+
46
+Stallman pioneered the concept of copyleft, and is the main author of
47
+the GNU General Public License, the most widely used free software
48
+license.
49
+
50
+Stallman graduated from Harvard in 1974 with a BA in physics. During his
51
+college years and after, he worked as a staff hacker at the MIT
52
+Artificial Intelligence Lab, learning operating system development by
53
+doing it. He wrote the first extensible Emacs text editor there in 1975.
54
+He also developed the AI technique of dependency-directed backtracking,
55
+also known as truth maintenance. In January 1984 he resigned from MIT to
56
+start the GNU project.
